A new take on voiding diaries!

Voiding diaries or bladder diaries are a highly valuable diagnostic tool for both patient and physician. A voiding diary is a daily record of the patient’s fluid intake and urinary output and can help to objectify a patient’s subjective explanation of voiding habits and symptoms, such as voiding frequency and urgency. Additionally they can be used to set a baseline and track improvements or decline in a patient’s symptoms over time or after treatment.

Usually voiding diaries are recorded on paper or in some cases with a mobile app, where the patient has to manually measure his/her voided volume using a measuring cup and keep track of liquid intake and occurred incontinence episodes. A voiding diary often runs for three 24-hour time periods.

A new take on voiding diaries

When talking to clinicians who have a lot of experience with voiding diaries, a commonly recurring feedback is that voiding diaries can potentially be a highly valuable diagnostic tool. However, in practice the recorded voiding diaries are often unreliable due to low patient compliance, resulting in incomplete diaries, unclear notes or incorrectly measured volumes.

The method of keeping track of voided volume with a measuring cup is not comfortable for the patient, especially for women, and as such very prone to errors.
